What Are Dense Breasts?
What Are Dense Breasts?
Breast density refers to the amount of fibrous and glandular tissue compared to fat in the breast, as seen on a mammogram.
Dense breast tissue appears white on a mammogram, just like potential cancers. The dense breast tissue can therefore mask potential problems in the breast.
➡️ Having dense breasts is common and normal. Up to 50% of women over 40 have dense breast tissue.
Why does it matter?
Why does it matter?
- Increased density can raise your risk of developing breast cancer. Density is rated from A to D on your mammogram. Women with group D “dense” breasts have double the risk of breast cancer compared to women with group B “not dense” breast tissue.
- It also makes mammograms less effective at detecting some cancers. 30% to 50% of cancers may not be detectable by mammogram in women with dense breasts.
- Most women with dense breasts do not get breast cancer, but understanding your options helps you stay informed.
