Musculoskeletal Ultrasound Scans

Scans can check the muscles around the shoulder including the rotator cuff. Can also show joint problems.

Often recommended to assess shoulder pain, rotator cuff syndrome and frozen shoulder.

Depending on your problem further treatment may be possible such as a joint infection.

Scans can check structures including joints, tendons and muscles.

Can show common problems such as carpal tunnel syndrome, cysts and arthritis.

We can help if pain restricts you from working out, moving normally, achieving your fitness objectives, or getting enough sleep at night.

Injection options include:

Steroid injections help to diminish inflammation and the pain it causes.

Hyaluronic Acid injections function to lubricate the joints against shock and stress. Including the latest Ostenil injections.

Hydrodilatation for frozen shoulder to help free restricted tissue and restore range of movement.

General Ultrasound Scans

Scans can check organs including the liver, gallbladder, pancreas and spleen.

Can show problems such as gallstones, fatty liver and enlarged liver or spleen.

Scans can check the kidneys, ureters (tubes that drain kidneys) and bladder.

Can show common problems such as cysts (fluid filled swellings), blockages such as caused by stones and possible tumours. Can also check that the bladder is emptying completely.

Scans can show common problems such as hernias, cysts (fluid-filled swellings) and possible tumours.

Breast Ultrasound Scans

The scan uses ultrasound waves to create images of the tissue inside the breasts. It does not involve any radiation. It can be completed in the clinic in less than 30 minutes.

A scan may be recommended if there is a lump inside the breast. It may also be recommended to follow-up on areas seen on a mammogram scan.

If you have a lump or are worried about breast cancer we would always recommend seeing a breast specialist. In addition to ultrasound other tests such as a mammogram and/or a biopsy (taking a sample using a needle) are often needed.

We would always recommend that women who wish to have breast cancer screening have a mammogram. This test has the strongest evidence for reducing the risk of dying from breast cancer. It can detect things like abnormal calcification, which may be missed on an ultrasound scan.

The scan uses sound waves to get images of the breast tissue. No radiation or x-rays are used in the scans. Depending on the results of the scan further checks such as a needle biopsy may be recommended.

In the UK breast density is often not checked. We know that women with the highest level of density benefit from extra screening, using MRI or ultrasound scans. This has been shown to detect more cancers than mammograms alone. Additional screening will also mean more cancers are detected at stage 1 when treatment is more likely to be effective.

At Coyne Medical we recommend all women have their breast density assessed at their mammogram. If the results show they are in the higher risk group then we discuss the pros and cons of additional screening. We recommend annual mammogram screening from 40 years of age for average-risk women.

Breast density is just one risk factor for breast cancer, other important factors include family history, genetics, body mass index and alcohol intake.
